The Love Locks of Mexico City

Greetings Lovelies,

On our recent trip to Mexico City, my partner and I stayed in the heart of Roma Norte. We adored the area! We were located in a building called "Casa de la Brujas" (House of the Witches), across the street from Plaza Rio de Janeiro; a small, but beautiful lively park with lots of activities on the weekends.

Our little corner of the city was lovely! The building IS haunted, including our apartment (I'll save that story for next time) and on the Leo Full Moon (on February 16th) the park was full of ritual attendees chanting and revering the Moon. Just around the corner from us was the Modo Museum (Museo del Objeto del Objeto).

The Modo Museum has what I believe is a permanent installation of Love Locks. Love Locks are popular in many famous locations around the world. They're a very public and popularized display of folk magick for love. Hoodoo is one example of a folk tradition that uses locks to lockdown, or bind a romantic relationship. Locks can also be used in magick to bind, or solidify any other kind of circumstance or situation, like a job. The idea has it's premise in sympathetic magick, which means that when something is done to an object which symbolizes a person or situation, then the person or situation is also influenced. Of course, within the practice of magick there is another important step, which is energetically or spiritually linking the person or situation to the object.

Anyway, Love Locks are meant to bind a relationship in love and to bind people together in the loving bond. The installation at Museo del Objecto del Objecto (The Museum of Objects), is very much interactive. Participants are encouraged to throw the keys to their locks in a drop box near the door of the museum and thousands of people have participated, commemorating their loving relationships and their wishes for a long future together. In many areas people traditionally threw their keys in a body of water, especially those locations that are positioned on bridges, which seems to be a pretty popular location for this tradition. A drop box is a much more eco friendly option in my opinion!

I once found a very folksy spell on an old wooden foot bridge near a defunct railway while on a kayak trip in Michigan. I imagine the person who laid the spell assumed very few people would traverse this area, and that if they did they may not know what they've come across. This spell consisted of a photo held down by a rock, with some love related symbols on the back, and a padlock locked to the bridge. A VERY affective spell if you put the right energy behind it, and believe in your magick!

I look forward to sharing more Mexico tidbits with you as time allows.... and maybe in the future other travel adventures as well!

~Blessings~
